Reagan Loy ~ My First Deer Hunt

My name is Reagan, I am eight years old and I live in Key Largo. This year I went deer hunting with my daddy for the first time.  I was so excited to fly to Indiana to go hunting.  When we woke up we put warm clothes on and stepped outside. It was very cold with frost on the ground. I could also see my breath.  All this was very new to me because where I live is very warm.  I was ready to hunt!

I decided that my daddy was going to shoot first because I wanted to see how it was done.  We started our walk into the woods. My daddy told me to walk quietly and to not drag my feet.  We got to the tree stand, it was pitch black and we had to wait for the sun to come out.

Finally the sun came out.  My daddy was watching the woods while I was looking the other way into the field. A couple minutes later I saw a buck charging right at us. I knew it was a buck because of his antlers.  I tapped my daddy on his shoulder and said, “Daddy, Daddy there’s a deer!” He picked up his gun and shot the deer. Daddy said, ” I wouldn’t have shot that deer if it wasn’t for you.” I said back , “I think you found your new hunting partner!” It was a great morning!

I couldn’t wait to get back in the woods to shoot my deer!  I was feeling very excited and nervous.  That afternoon we got back in the stand. We practiced looking through the scope of the gun.  I have shot many guns before but I wanted to make sure I was ready.

Just like before, I was watching the field. A little bit later I saw a buck step out the woods.  I knew right away that it was the one I was looking for. Daddy helped me get my gun ready and I found the deer in the scope. My heart was pounding. The deer was walking away so I waited for it to turn. Finally, it turned so I could see his front shoulder. My whole body was shaking. I held the scope on the deer’s front shoulder and slowly squeezed the trigger.  Bang! The deer dropped right where it stood. Tears of joy was in my eyes and my daddy’s eyes too. I was so happy!
We got out of the stand to go look at my deer. The first thing we did was thank God for this blessing. It was a beautiful seven pointer. This was one of the best days of my life. I can’t wait to go again next year!
