Hushpuk – Mackenzie Walters

hushpuk logoMost bow hunters have an opinion on crossbows–you are either for them or against them. One thing all bow hunters can agree on is crossbows can be loud. Products to reduce noise and vibration have been developed for both compound bows and crossbows. The Hushpuk is one such example of a noise dampening system.

Hushpuks are unique as they can be repositioned in order to achieve maximum sound and vibration dampening. A special polymer is used to make the back of the Hushpuk sticky in order to position the dampener almost anywhere on your bow as long as it does not inhibit the movement of the cam or string. If Huskpuks lose their stickiness, they can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and revived.

Hushpuks come in an oval or oblong shape. The oblong shape fit well on the split limbs of my crossbow. Hushpuks can be protected from being knocked off while walking through the woods or in the stand by placing them on the inside of the limbs and the low profile design decreases the chance of this happening as well. Hushpuks weigh 90-93 grains, adding very little weight to your bow.

While sighting in a new crossbow without Hushpuks, I paid close attention to the sounds the crossbow made while shooting and could hear a distinct “twang” from the string. Following the directions on the package, I cleaned the application area with an alcohol prep pad and placed a Hushpuk on each limb closest to the limb pockets to begin. I observed that the string sound was reduced leaving only a thud. I moved the Hushpuks approximately one length down the limb. Again, the string sound was minimal as was the thud. I did not move the Hushpuks any further down the limbs as I was fearful the speed of the crossbow would be effected.

No residue was left behind from repositioning Hushpuks from the original position near the limb pockets. Once I found the position I wanted to leave the dampening system in, I removed the Hushpuks, cleaned the area with isopropyl alcohol as well as the Hushpuk. Once the area and the Hushpuk were dry, I placed the Huskpuks back on the limbs. Hushpuks stayed on my crossbow for a month before I moved them again.
