Mineral sites are a win-win situation for both the hunter and the deer population. Most hunters understand minerals are necessary not only for antler growth, but for milk production for nursing does. Using minerals is one of the easiest ways to supplement deer nutrition while maintaining deer on your property. The use of minerals can also help the hunter’s scouting efforts by the use of trail cameras placed over mineral sites.

There are as many reasons to use minerals as there are mineral products. During a trade show, I had the opportunity to talk with representatives from Invite X-Tream Wildlife System. While talking about food plot seed, I was encouraged to give Fat Rax Deer Mineral Mix a try. I have tried several minerals in the past but thought it was worth a try.

Following the manufacturer recommendations, I mixed the minerals with water and poured directly over a stump. The stump I chose was in an area I knew the deer traveled frequently and they would likely find the minerals with ease. I went back to check the site after a couple of weeks to find the deer had torn the ground up around the mineral site and literally began eating a hole in the stump. As the field test progressed, the area the deer tore up became larger as well as the hole in the stump. To say the least, I was impressed with the results and decided to make several more mineral sites on the properties we hunt.
